Ok,

Well let me keep it simple. I had a REALLY crappy time at this Denny's across the street from my university. Problems consited of 1) Never (in the whole course of our meal) having our drinks refilled even when asked, 2) Finding HAIR in my burger, 3) Not getting an apology or a refund for the food.

The waitress said that she couldn't refund my money since the manager wasn't there... I almost killed her right THEN! Luckily I have three friends as witnesses, and can probably get something done.

So I was thinking about writing a letter to Denny's corporate... how should I go about doing this?

Cite names and store numbers. Don't just spout off with "I was at Denny's, you know the one near <landmark 1> in <podunk college town 1>."

Be polite, but descriptive.

Call the restaurant later and speak with the manager, and no one else. Calmly explain to him/her what happened and give him/her an opportunity to correct the problem and make some sort of restitution with you. If this doesn't work, they probably have a regional or district office. Contact them next. Then proceed up the chain of command if you still are not satisfied.

Contacting the store manager in the local establishment nearly always works for me. They usually offer you some free meals, in this case, probably 4, since 4 of you had your lunch experience ruined by this turn of events.

Anyway, check that out first and see what you can get there.

Good call. Writing a letter to corporate will probably just get you a BS form letter response, but talking to the store manager will more than likely work.

I'd first wait until the manager is there, and talk to the manager. If that fails, Planetfeedback is a good site with form letters to get you started (you can alter them to your liking, or use one that is already written). My wife used that site a lot a couple years ago (for complaints but mostly for suggestions and compliments) and we got lots of free things - ie the companys usually do read them and do respond.

My friend was unhappy about his service at Denny's so he filled out a comment card. To my surprise, they mailed him a coupon for a free meal. I always thought those comment cards went in the trash.

I have avoided Denny's for this reason for years. The fact that people still expect decent food/service from them actually surprises me somewhat.

You think that's bad? When I was visiting my family last week in CA, we went to the Denny's on Moorpark road in Thousand Oaks for a quick breakfast before going on a Frys run (it's a custom).

My brother's pancakes had eggshells in them and the waitress disappeared for over 30 minutes. :|

Good point. Considering we are dealing with Denny's here, the procedures outlined above may not have much of a chance, but it's worth a try. Perhaps I should have said earlier that most reputable, well managed restaurant chains (including fast food) would have no problem assisting you with your problem on a local level. That may be more than we can expect from Denny's.

One additional note, if they do help you out, you may want to contact a regional office or corporate or someone and praise them for how helpful their local manager was. Think about it .... how often do those of us that work with the public hear quick complaints when people are not satisfied and how rarely do we get thanks and/or praise?

They get paid the minimum ... what can you expect? Did you by any chance go afterhours to eat? I noticed that the late night workers are the rudest of them all.

Alright, I think I'm going to call the local manager then... it was so lame though; it totally DID ruin the entire night.

Sending a letter won't do $hit. Just don't go back.

In most cases, it'll get him free Denny's food (if he choses to go back - or at least he can give the free certificates to a friend). Simply not going back and ignoring the problem is what won't do $hit.
