how to write a cover letter for an award?

It's a award for undergraduate students in the department.. only one given out every spring

The only reason I want it is for the prestige factor and I've never won an award before. It's also one extra thing I can list on my resume... if employers ask, I can explain that it's only given out once every year
It's not a financial award.. more of a recognition award so I'm having a hard time trying to write this cover letter explaining my interest

All I have so far is
"As a senior studying [my major] in the [Department] at the [name of school], I am very interested in being considered for the [name of award]"

I could use some guidance

Ask previous winners how they won it.

maybe talk about why you deserve the award, talk about your academic achievements and extra curricular activities

Hint that you have some sort of crippling disease without actually naming it.

if it's social science then be as liberal/socialist/communist as you can and add some Bush shvt talk and you'll go to the top of the list

Or you could be really smart and go to the top of the list.

Its no wonder to me that smart people are liberal, and not conservative/religious fundamentalist/bigoted racists.
