i was told by the Western Digital Tech Support that i should use their data lifeguard software to write 0s to my hard drive. i have looked and looked, and there is no way to do that using their software. this is identical software to what Maxtor includes with their drives. anyone know how?

Well, I can tell you this. I've used Western Digital's Data LifeGuard Tools to write 0s to my hard drive. So, I'd say you just haven't found it, for some reason. It's been a long time since I did that, so I can't recall the screens, etc., that you should see when using their software.

I just checked version 1.10 of their Data Lifeguard - I didn't see anything in there for zero-writing, or formatting, or anything of the sort. I'll try DLG Diagnostic v5.04c quick.

Ah, yes, try DLG Diagnostic v5.04c. It has an option right there in the main menu - write 0s to drive. Just overwrite the correct drive, or else your next post will be "how do I recover data from a wiped drive?" ;)
