I was thinking of purchasing a 22" lcd monitor to alleviate my 14" thinkpad when I'm at home, I was wondering if I could use the lcd as a TV also? Is there anyway to do this besides having to get a tv card?

edit
Since i'll be living in university housing, all I'll have to connect it to the lcd monitor is via cable only :( no cable box at all

You're gonna need some kind of software of course. The TV card should come with something, but I'm sure somebody else can recommend you better options.

I watch TV on my 24" LCD via HDMI from IPTV box. I use optical for audio since the LCD doesn't have speakers.

While they're low quality, they also have those USB tv tuners.

The advantage would be ultimate portability and as long as it's a decent one, you should be able to find a sucker if you decide to sell it. Just get one with a remote control. ;)

There are two ways:
Get a tv card or usb tv adapter for your pc.

Get an external box that just hooks up to the lcd monitor using vga. Viewsonic Nextvision, for example.

I would buy a USB or PCI TV tuner, ripped from SD:

Circuit city has two models of Hauppauge WinTV on sale for $59.99 after $20.00 rebate.

Use the $15.00 off 100 coupon to get them for $45.

The USB version http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd...ctDetail.do?oid=161904

Internal / PCI version http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd...ctDetail.do?oid=168467

You'll need a filler item to get your total above 100.

Note: some people have said that circuit city "adjusts" the rebate if you go below a certain price. It's still worth using the coupon because if you don't get your rebate back you only loose $5.00.

PM me your e-mail address and I'll e-mail you a CircuitCity.com $15 off $100 coupon code. Order online and select in-store pickup
