Hi i have been trying with no success to configure a Win XP pro box to wake on lan.

i have the wire connected between the nic and mainboard
wake on lan is enabled in the bios.
network connects with other pc's on the network with no problems but i can't make any of the boxs powerup or resume from standby from the other pc's.

You are on the right track, except for the fact that your NIC has to be Wake-On LAN compatible. If it is, check the motherboard and NIC manufacturers websites for support information or driver/BIOS updates for any possible fixes.

Good luck!

You need a Wake-On-Lan packet generator. The NIC only wakes up the PC if it recieves a certain packet, otherwise it would never shut off.

I never fully understood how it would fall back asleep or the purpose of it, especially with security in mind. Thank you for clarifying. I just knew that your NIC had to be compatible too.

do you know where to find one that works? i found two that don't (wol.exe and server tools.exe)

thanks!!!!!!!!!!
