How to use TV "Audio Out Coaxial"

My 22" Coby (bargain priced) TV has very poor sound. The only available audio out is labelled "Audio Out Coaxial"; I believe this is actually a digital output. Need suggestions for connecting this to something inexpensive but non-tinny speakers(like the kind that connect with a 3.5mm jack to a PC sound card). Is some kind of 'converter' needed? This is not near any stereo equipment so it has to be a stand-alone connection. Mechanically, an RCA male connector fits into the "Audio Out Coaxial" female output; if I convert this using an RCA to mini adapter will I get mono output (which would probably be better than the sound I'm getting off the TV now)?

Normally you would have to use a receiver. I had socket 939 motherboard that had digital coax, so I used essentially an rca cable going from the PC to the receiver. I think DVD players back in the day had this as an alternative to optical. What it sounds like you want to do is use a Digital Coax to Analog RCA converter. I just did a quick google search and found this on Amazon for $39.

Also, check out the FiiO D3. People seem to like this brand.

Another for $19.

Reviews look good, but I have never used something like this.

As I feared, it looks like I'll need some digital to analog converter rather than just a connector adapter. Thanks for the suggestions.
