How to use SUB ports on kb and on monitor?

inquiring

Member
Hello..I have (2) USB ports on my MS Natural Pro kb and (4) USB ports on my SONY monitor. However, I noticed that these USB ports do NOT connect to my mobo. How then are these USB ports of any use and how are they supposed to be used?
Thank you.😕

Does that then mean that the other "free" USB port on the kb or on the monitor will then be connected to the mobo?
So I have to use 1 port to get the other port to be active?
Thank you

The Sony monitors I've seen have a USB port on the back that you connect to your computer. The port is smaller and square-ish.

As for keyboards, if it's a USB keyboard then obviously it's already connected. I haven't seen any PS/2 keyboards that have USB hubs.

You can't have USB ports on a PS2 keyboard. If the keyboard itself is connected to the mainboard via USB, you can use its internal hub to connect e.g. the mouse.
Same with monitors - they need a USB connection to the mainboard, and then you can conveniently plug other USB stuff that's one the desktop there, without having to crawl under the table and reach behind the back of the computer.

I find the usb ports on the keyboard useless, its not powered so you cant plug anything that requires power into it, maybe the mouse and thats it but its better to run the mouse off the PS2 port.

No it's not. Heck, that's a myth with a lot of stamina.
Anyone else here who thinks he gets smoother operation from a 1977 8-bit ISA software driven generic I/O controller (aka the mouse/keyboard controller) than from a PCI bus mastering intelligent I/O engine aka USB?

Sorry HiTek21, you're absolutely wrong. A USB mouse has an extremely high DPI compared to a PS2 mouse, which increases response and precision. You are much better off using the USB.

As for the Microsoft Natural Pro Keyboard, the cord has a USB plug which runs power to the hub built into the keyboard, so plug your keyboard into the USB on the back of your computer This hub is very useful for many pieces of hardware. Its unpowered, but will still work for digital cameras, flash drives, mice etc. If the hardware already has its own AC adaptor like a PDA or printer it will also work off the keyboard just fine.
