How to use SPDIF on Epox mobo (AC97)

Ok, lately I've been wondering how to use the SPDIF because for once I want to go digital with my sound instead of getting all this background noise as you usually get with analogue signals when turning up the speakers, but the thing is I don't have a clue what to do, I know on the motherboard there's 5 pins in a six pin-like array on the motherboard.
GND ? ? SPDIF_IN
NC ?
SPDIF_OUT ? ? VCC
Umm, I don't know what the above is going to look like lol but the ? is the pins in that order.
Now I'm not exactly sure what to do here, is there some sort of connecter I have to use? Or just simply enabling it in the AUDIO settings work and go through the standard sound sockets (where the speakers plug into)?

The SPDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) connector is the digital audio link between the mobo and your CD/DVD drives. You simply plug the SPDIF cable (you may need to buy one if it didn't come with any your drives or mobo) on the one end into the CD or DVD drive and on the other end into the mobo pin slot that you already know about.

I take it that would only play back Digital Audio as in Music CDs etc and not straight to the sound card? Or would that bypass the A/D convertor and go straight to a digital output?

If your motherboard supports 6 Channel Sound and SPDIF but lacks the digital out connector on the back then it's likely you have to purchase an optional audio bracket that would give you the extra connectors.

That looks the jobby yeah....providing your motherboard supports it, it will give you digital out.
