Ok, I just bought a new home.

Each room has CAT5 run. All of the CAT5 runs down to the basement. Each blue and blue/white twisted pair is setup to be used by telco.

How would I go about using two of the remaining three twisted paris to carry 10baseT network signals.

I am thinking:

1) new faceplates in the room that have both RJ11 & RJ45 plugs
2) use the blue/white + blue twisted pair for RJ11 telephone
3) use two of the other three twisted pairs in the RJ45 for ethernet
4) add a plug to the basement end of the CAT5 twisted pairs and plug them into my LAN switch/router

Viola - I have home networking and if I plug in the cable modem, internet access for all

Should I get a company to do this or is buying the tools and connectors reasonable enough to try this myself.

Where should I look for wiring diagrams to show me which pins are used by 10baseT?

BINGO

Thx - as the link says, this should work, but might cause problems, especially when the phone rings; but this is exactly what I was looking for, so thanks!

yep, and also remember that future and current network technologies use all four pairs.

So keep phone and data separate. Best practice it to run three cat5 drops to each outlet - two for data with the third broken out into two voice outlets.

I appreciate the info ... this is for home and my next step in terms of network upgrade will be some type of 802.nn-xx wireless.
