How to use ICS on wireless laptop with built in adapter

i tried this once before but used a straight thru patch cable. i read i need a crossover for this is this true?

i'm trying to get my xbox 360 wireless without having to by the $100 adapter
 
i used to do this with my ps2...i just used a crossover cable from the laptop to ps2 and used internet connection sharing with the wireless connection. The ethernet on the laptop should make a default ip address for the xbox.
