How to use google maps to plot destinations

I'd like to make a little web app for a friend of mine who needs to have multiple destinations plotted on a map with directions automatically. It seems the ebst is to use google maps since we can do this manually but I'd like to do it via the web app where he just checks off the destinations he wants to hit and then click a button and the web app sets up the google map page for him with directions to all the destinations.

any suggestions on how to get started with making this possible on the google maps side? It's kind of a hassle web scraping google pages so I was hoping to get a few pointers from anyone who's got experience with this
