How to use 2.1 speakers with a soundcard supporting only stereo and 5.1

So how I can use 2.1 speakers with the integrated sound card in my Asus P5B? I use separate stereos and a subwoofer, so how I can use the subwoofer output in the sound card? The sound card driver doesn't have an option for 2.1 speakers, only for stereo, 7.1 and 5.1.

The ".1" channel refers to subwoofer. A two channel speaker set that includes a subwoofer should give you what you want.

Yes, but I don't want to buy a set of speakers. I have decent stereos and a self-made subwoofer and I want to use them.. And an equivalent 2.1 set could be quite expensive..

So, do it.

If your subwoofer is powered, you still need an active crossover to separate the frequencies to drive it. If you don't have an active crossover, you'll have to buy or build one. If your subwoofer is passive, you'll need to buy or build the amp to drive it, as well.

are you kidding???

You can get a nice 2.1 set up for $50-$125 depending on how much you want to spend.

Well, my subwoofer is powered and it has an active crossover filter.. so the only problem is to make my sound card put the normal stereo sound to the normal 3.5mm stereo out plugin, while putting the low frequencies to the subwoofer plugin.

Basically, the sound card does this in 5.1 mode, I just don't know how to make it do it in 2.1 mode. Maybe AC3 filter has some settings which could do it?



If I can't do it from the computer, I'm thinking about doing it by making a cable which connects both line outs (going to the stereos) to the subwoofer..

Err.. since when $100 2.1 sets have played frequencies as low as 20Hz? An commercial subwoofer which is equivalent to my self-made one (which has Hypex DS-1.2 amp and SPL Dynamics 10" element) would cost around 1000? or $1500 in here. So I'm NOT going to buy a 2.1 set.

Can you run the front input out to your subwoofer, have it handle the HPF, then route the output to your stereo/receiver's input?
