Would it be better to buy an upgrade from a site (RAM, HD...) from IBM, Dell, Alienware, and so on, or go to NEWEGG and buy it off of there and replace it yourself. Looking at price vs. time and effort. I know what im doin so i wont be bumbling around.

Those are end user replaceable parts so you would be fine to go to Newegg or somebody like that and pick some up. It is when you start playing around with the CPU or GPU that you will void your warranty.

I have a Dell Latitude D505. So far I have upgraded HD (7K60), RAM (1GB DDR 333) and miniPCI LAN card (Atheros 5004), Bluetooth module. None of them are from Dell due to pricing.

Same components from interent company are simply much cheaper than Dell. As long as you following the specifications of the laptop, it would not be an issue.

Definitely avoid buying products like RAM, HDD, etc from the manufacturer; they will rape you out the ass for prices.
I would look at pricewatch.com and pricegrabber.com and of course FS/FT here for good deals on products
