How to Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro

Upgrading Windows 10 Home edition to Pro is merely the matter of using a product key that unlocks the Pro features on your existing Windows.

If your Windows is digitally licensed, i.e. your laptop was shipped with Windows 10 Home pre-installed and activated, the easiest way to upgrade to Pro is through Microsoft Store. On the other hand, if the case is otherwise, you can buy a genuine Windows 10 Pro key either from the Store itself of from any third-party vendor, and replace the current key with the new one to upgrade.

Here’s how you can upgrade your Windows 10 Home to Pro using both the methods discussed above:

METHOD 1

UPGRADE THROUGH MICROSOFT STORE

Step 1
Get to the Security & Update window

Click Start, go to Settings, and click the Update & Security tile. This opens the Update & Security window. From here you can configure and manage Windows updates, and many other settings to make your Windows secure.

Step 2
Get to Microsoft Store

Click Activation from the left pane, and click Go to the Store from the right pane. This launches Microsoft Store, and automatically opens the correct page for you to proceed with the upgrade. Depending on the current status of your Windows (already activate or otherwise), the Go to the Store link may appear under Update product key, Activate Windows, or any other section.

Step 3
Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

Click Upgrade to Pro from the page that opens up, and follow the on-screen instructions from there. This upgrades your Windows 10 to Pro and lets you use all the advanced features that weren’t available in the Home edition. Depending on whether your Windows is activated using digital license or otherwise, you may not or may have to add the product key manually respectively in order to complete the process.

METHOD 2

UPGRADE WITH A PRO PRODUCT KEY

Step 1
Obtain a Windows 10 Pro product key from Microsoft Store (as explained above) or from any trusted third-party vendor.

Step 2
Get to the Activation window

Follow the process given in METHOD 1 > Step 1 to get to the Update & Security window, and then click Activation from the left pane. This opens the Activation window with all the required links and options in the right. Depending on the current status of your Windows 10 (activated or otherwise), the options and their subheadings may differ.

Step 3
Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

Click Change product key, enter the new product key you obtained in the Product key field on the Enter a product key box, click Next, and follow the on-screen instructions from there. This verifies the product key with Microsoft, applies the key if found valid and genuine, upgrades your Windows 10 Home to Pro, and unlocks all the Pro features for you to use. It is advisable to keep your product key at a safe place from where you can get it back whenever needed.
