How to upgrade an operating system?

I want to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP, and I have no clue what to do. Do I just put the Windows XP CD in and follow the instructions (I'd try it, but I don't have a CD yet)? Do I need to do something special? And also, will it delete all my data like a re-format would? I don't really mind if it does, I just need to back up my important data if it does.

I would start by backing up all my data. Then, I would go about performing a clean install of XP after formatting the drive/partition. Uprading from 98 to XP will probably mean buying trouble, assuming the XP CD allows an upgrade.

It is still best to do a clean install. So backup the data that you cannot afford to lose and then install XP. Make sure to complete delete 98 and reformat the drive for XP. All this (except backing up) can be done by just putting in the XP disc.

Also make sure before you start you download and save all the relevant hardware drivers for your system.
I also agree with the above posters in imploring you to do a fresh install and not an upgrade. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

If you have your Win 98 CD, you don't need to get the full version CD of Win XP in order to format your HD and do a fresh install of Win XP. When you put the Win XP CD in your CD drive and startup, and the installation procedure starts (from an upgrade Win XP CD), you'll be prompted to insert the Win 98 CD so that the install procedure can verify that you're entitled to the upgrade version. Then, it will proceed to do a full install of Win XP, same as from a full version CD.

You are still allowed to perform a clean install with a Windows XP upgrade disc.
Yes, as long as the upgrade CD can verify you're entitled to an upgrade, meaning you have an earlier version of Windows.
