How to Update your ATI Drivers:

One of the quickest ways to encounter problems with your computer is to improperly install new drivers. Even if you try uninstalling old drivers first, some driver residue can be left behind that can cause system problems.

One way to deal with this issue is to do a clean reinstall of your OS. But this can be rather time consuming and inconvenient if all you want to do is upgrade a driver. Below is a step by step method for uninstalling ATI software, cleaning out driver and registry residue, and upgrading to the new drivers:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Uninstall Hydravision, do not reboot
- Uninstall drivers, do not reboot
- Uninstall control panel,
- Reboot but reboot directly into safe mode
- When prompted that new hardware is found by Windows, click the cancel button, this may happen twice
- Go into device manager and uninstall the display adapters with yellow exclamation points.
- Run Driver Cleaner from driverheaven.net
- Disconnect your internet connection by unpluggng your network cable.
- Reboot into normal mode.
- When prompted that Windows found new hardware, click "cancel" (you may need to do this twice, so be patient)
- Install the Catalyst drivers, do not reboot
- Install the new Control panel
- Reboot into normal mode, when at desktop, follow onscreen instructions
- Install Hydravision if you wish
- Go into control panel and uninstall Intel Application Accelerator (IAA) if you had it installed
- Upon reboot, reinstall IAA if you still want or need to use it

- All done

this has worked for me time and time again... get it right! :D

Good guide, but its more specific to the person who wrote.
Theres a more in depth one at rage3d, at the top of the "catalyst discussion" forum.

The more in depth one comes in handy if you have a bug or an error that wont go away, its sort of a last step before reinstalling windows.

simply as a point of information this was my process with no problems:

remove control panel
remove ati drivers
uninstall video adapters

REBOOT

cancel all install prompts
install ati drivers
install control panel

REBOOT
