How to uninstall windows media player from xp?

I've tried removing it from the add/remove windows components, but windows media player would still open up if I try to play a mp3 or movie file. I still see the windows media player folder in program files.

it's built-in to windows. the most you can do is remove it to the base version that came with XP (8). you can change what program opens which files tho, which sounds like that is what you would like. Right click the file->open with->choose whatever prog you want, tick "always open with this program" and you're set.

If I delete the windows media player folder in program files, would that get rid of it?
I've set my files to use a default player. After removing media player from windows components, just to test to see if I've removed media player, I right click on my file and open with media player, it would still work. So there is no way to remove it for good?

I haven't tried this with Media Player, but I disabled Messenger by simply renaming the Messenger folder to 'MessengerNot'.

Did a scan with Norton WinDoctor and WinDoctor listed about a dozen 'problem' links to Messenger. Selected 'Fix All', and Messenger is effectively 'gone'. XP doesn't see Messenger, no boot problems, etc.

XP will not let you uninstall Media Player.

Hope this helps!
