how to uninstall the fan of the pIII 1G cpu?

it's said I need to remove the fan first, then heatsink, then cpu
is that right?
but how to remove the fan?
mine is a boxed pIII 1G

silkrain, I'm not sure exactly what your heatsink/fan looks like, but the ones that came with my Celeron 1.1 and 1.2 simply snap onto the heatsink with 4 little tabs in each corner. To remove it, you simply squeeze one corner and pull until it dislodges, then the other corner on that side, then it will swing up and away from the heatsink. The heatsink for the 1.1 has a plastic retention mechanism that has a swinging tab bar to connect it to the socket, while the 1.2 has the traditional metal clip. That info was just so you could see if your unit is similar to either of mine, however both my fans are identical and interchangeable. HTH

if it's a slot 1 cpu then look here!
just squeeze the edges of the fan housing together & the fan housing should lift off the heatsink.
