I have installed sp2 on a system.
It now cannot boot in normal or safe mode(command, network) whatever.
last known good does not work.
It simply reboots before choosing a user to log in.
Can i uninstall from recovery console? if so, how? thx

A couple of my posts are useful. This was an honest mistake though. :)

Sorry I can't help.

ok, np
i think that this is going to be a pretty common error , probably caused by an AV, cdrw software and other misc apps perhaps messing up the update (kind of like the win98 to XP upgrade issue).
it is easy enought to uninstall in safe mode, or to use system restore, but if I cannot boot into safe mode w/command prompt , i am left only with the recovery console scenario.
I'm pretty sure a repair install isn't going to work (i'm not even going to try that one) unless of course i could use an XP cd with a slipstreamed sp2.
My question regarding recovery console is... i should be able to navigate to c:\windows\$ntspuninstall...\spuninst and then execute spuninst.exe.
I cannot . when running a dir of spuninst is see the exe , but it is prefixed by 08403___c__.....spuninst.exe.
if i type this filename it is still unable to execute.
Basically i was wondering if anyone has ever uninstalled it from recovery console , and if so , How? and did it work well?
if not, does anyone have any other alternatives??

You could try deleting the windows (winnt?) directory and reinstalling without formatting. You'll have to go through your updates again, but it might be easier than a full reinstall.

OR he can look it up in google instead of listening to OpenBSD freaks like you.
So what your OS's updates never cause self destruction?
So what if you never have to worry about malware?
So what if your security record is the best in the software industry and Windows XP is the worst?

Doesn't mean that you have to be all snobbish about it.

After all Windows is so easy, right? I mean look at this!:

from here
1. Turn on the computer with the Microsoft® Windows® XP disc in the
CD/DVD drive. When prompted to start from the CD, press any key. If
you miss the message and arrive at a blinking cursor, restart the
computer and try pressing any key again when the message appears.

2. Windows XP Setup prepares to run. If you need to install a third-party
SCSI or RAID driver, press the F6 key during startup.

3. The option for an Automated System Recovery appears momentarily.

4. Setup loads the files necessary for the installation, and then starts
Windows.

5. Press the R key to run the Recovery Console for Windows XP.

6. Press the number for the corresponding Windows installation for which
you know the administrator password.

7. After selecting the appropriate Windows installation, type the
administrator password when prompted.

8. The screen displays a C:\WINDOWS prompt.

9. At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type: cd $ntservicepackuninstall$.
Press the ENTER key.

10. At the At the C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ prompt, type: cd
spuninst. Press ENTER.

11. At the At the C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\SPuninst prompt,
type: batch spuninst.txt. Press ENTER.

12. The batch file manually removes Service Pack 2 from the computer. This
process takes several minutes.

13. At the C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\SPuninst prompt, type:
Exit. Press ENTER. The computer restarts.

14. From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, type:
Regedit. Click OK.

15. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ServicesRPCSs.

16. In the right pane, double-click ObjectName.

17. An Edit String dialog box displays. In the dialog box, type:
Localsystem. Click OK.

18. From the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

19. Restart the computer.

20. Open Control Panel.

From the Microsoft® Windows® XP default Start menu, click
Control Panel.

From the classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.

21. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

If you are in Category View, click Add or Remove Programs.

If you are in Classic View, double-click Add or Remove
Programs.

22. In the Add or Remove Programs window, select Windows XP
Service Pack 2, and then click Remove.

23. In the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard dialog box,
click Next.

24. Service Pack 2 inspects the configuration, checks for necessary disk
space, stops services, restores catalogs, and then runs processes before
removal.

25. The computer deletes installed SP2 files and copies backup files to the
hard drive.

26. In the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard dialog box,
click Finish to restart the computer.

or just:

Note: If removing Service Pack 2 through Recovery Console does not properly
work, a repair installation of Windows XP will restore the original Windows XP
files.

See isn't that easy? I thought everybody knew how to do it.

Anyways, SP2 is wonderfull. IE now has a pop-up blocker! Whoo hoo!

And only 2 MAJOR exploits have been found (That I know of, and thats not counting the 2 minor ones dealing with the using old cache in explorer that MS dismissed as not important) so far in computers using SP2. That's only one a week so far isn't it?

Pretty decent for MS.

Yeah, that's another option.

They have, but I've always been able to blame it on my own actions. ;)

thx for that reply.
i actually did google that and tried to batch spuninst.txt.
it also was prefixed by 80304___C_....spuninst.txt.
when typing the exact file name , i was given an unrecognized command message.
i tried to attrib the file to no avail.
I think i may have to do a parallel install to gain access to the photos that i need on the original installation.
Drag.... Your post is actually better than the one i had seen earlier on google. With the registry entry and other info.
thx, i will keep the process info handy :)
