Has anyone tried the new hack utility released yesterday called NTswitch, it supposedly changes any version of NT/2000 to either the Server or workstation version (FROM 1 TO THE OTHER), check it out on Neowin or Iexbeta, I tried it on a 2k Pro machine and it did change all the titles and boot menu to 2000 Professional Server but my question is what else exactly does it change that makes it an actual "server" I have no experience using 2000 Server version so I don't really know what to expect. Any ideas on this, the theory is that all the files are already on the OS but in order to make it either a client workstation or a server there just needs to some changes made to the registry and that is what this file does.

A couple of things come to mind here.

1) There is no way this method would produce a stable environment.

2) Unless you own a license for both Pro and Server, this is illegal. And If you DID own a licenses for both, why would use this product of which you speak?

There are certainly differences in the makeup of both OS's as far as files go. Adminpak.msi is just one of the many I can think of.

I think this post should be locked.

Saltin as for this post being locked I am not posting a link to the file and even if I were I don't think this is illegal, I mean the file is located at a lot of major sites and it's not like it's only on IRC or some warez sites. I also asked about the validity of what it actually does and didn't exactly say to go download it and to get "Windows for free". The way I see it if it does in fact just change registry settings then it is a simple hack which could be done to a legal version of Windows if one knew what he were doing, I personally don't, I mean have you not changed the original version of whatever OS you are running with utilities or registry hacks and such. Oh and my version of 2000 Pro is a legal version and if I want to "hack" it and make it run like Linux or whatever OS I want should be my prerogative to do so and I think this utility just changes something that you already have it isn't illegal or leaked code it is just a hack. Hacks are sometimes taken as being derogatory but hacking isn't always bad it is just tweaking something one has legally. So if the mods decide to lock this post they need to do so but otherwise please don't suggest they do so just because YOU may interpret something as wrong.

It's Illegal.

You paid for a licence to run Windows 2000 Profesional. Thats all you are allowed to run under that liscence. I don't care if all you need to do is hack a few registery enteries to get it to work like server. These new abilities you have unlocked are not included in your licence, so you are not allowed to use them.

Your Liscence for 2k pro allows you to use features of 2k pro. You can't just get a free upgrade to Advanced Server, legaly, by using a hack. And your "I bought win2k pro legaly" excuse won't hold up. Thats why the sell server licenses. You didn't buy server...you bought profesional.

This "hack" probably ups the 10 user connection limit. Thats hard coded into the EULA for 2k pro, IIRC. As soon as you do that, you break the EULA.
