How to turn off these iPhone / iCloud backup messages?

I only have the 5 GB iCloud plan, and consequently it's not enough to backup my iPhone on iCloud. I'm not paying for the larger backup space until it drops down to $1 per month for 20 GB. (When is that going to be launched BTW?)

How do I turn off the repeated iCloud backup messages, or at least reduce the frequency of the reminders? Actually it's not just for me. It's annoying for me, but it's more annoying for my mother-in-law, who is using my old 16 GB iPhone 4.

She never backs up her phone, which isn't a big deal, since the vast majority of the content on it is made up of JPEGs sent to her from other people anyway, and mostly from me and my wife.

i don't think you can unless you turn off icloud backup completely.

however, you can select items that get backed up. you could selectively disable sections from getting backed up until you are under the limit.
settings > icloud > storage & backup > manage storage > this phone > backup options

Why do you still have your hand me down phone on your icloud account?

You can turn off iCloud backup I believe, but I don't want to do that. I just want to turn off the not-backed-up message, or at least reduce its frequency.

I don't. It's on her own iCloud account. It's a 16 GB iPhone 4.

I haven't figured this out either (granted, I haven't looked too deeply into it). It pops up and tells me I haven't backed up to iCloud in forever when I plug it in at night. I think I'm at 70 weeks now, haha. I only have the free base plan, which covers contacts & the last 1000 pictures or whatever, so I don't know why it's saying it's not backing up because it is - it's just not a full backup. Annoying.

Hmm, some interesting reading:

http://fox4kc.com/2012/08/20/icloud-back-up-warning-messages-annoying-you-heres-a-fix/

But the best way to free up space is to turn off the camera roll.

You don’t have to worry about your photos not being backed up because Photo Stream does that for you. It saves 1000 of your latest photos in an online album for 30 days. You also have the option of deleting the ones you don’t like.

Interesting, I didn't realize that Photo Stream was "separate" from iCloud. I just checked my iCloud settings:

Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > This iPhone

It has an alert icon next to my "Next Backup Size: 8.0 GB". I don't quite understand this because I just added up all of the visible storage and it's only like 1.7GB, but my backup size is 4.7GB. The stuff in the higher level on the tree under "Manage Storage" (the Documents & Data) is only 1.2MB & 5MB for Mail, but at the top it says "An addition 7.7 GB is required".

My problem is that it is not clear. So Photo Stream is separate from iCloud? Why is the Camera Roll turned off, if that's the case? Why does it show 7.7GB & 8.0GB, which is a 300MB difference? Why do the apps in my iCloud storage listing only add up to 1.7GB, not 8.0GB - is it like an incremental backup that adds up over time? It's not intuitive & makes no sense, which is odd for Apple. I've never really looked into it because the only thing I really use it for is backing up my Contacts.

As usual, Apple's cloud services implementation is a bit of a mess.

For me it'd be a lot easier if Apple just spelled out a "backup all photos to computer" check box in iTunes. I don't care if it takes a few hours. Just warn me about that, and I'll start the backup before I go to sleep.

Yeah, exactly. It's funny...there's very few things Apple is bad at, but when they're bad at it, they're bad at it. For example: Apple mice
