Hi all. I keep getting allot of trojans and spyware getting thru XP home edition even with a firewall and ad aware, spybot. I know it says to prevent this i should turn off like FTP, messenger services etc. How do I do this? This is actually for a friends comp and we want to turn off ALL programs that would let this stuff get thru and keep the ones he needs for email, gaming and surfing.

Now as I understand it messenger isnt msn messenger right? Can anyone tell me how to kill the services he wont need and any other programs than what I listed that would also help?

We are going to format it tomorrow and start fresh and I know to get all the XP updates to start off. I appreciate the help!

Thanks!

Yes mssenger is different than msn messenger. You can turn it off by entering Run...->services.msc. Set Messenger to disabled. Lots of other things you can turn off to. Don't let him use IE (I like Firefox).

You could also search Microsoft's website for several articles that pertain to how to the messsenger (either one).

First off configure your services (everyones first job with xp) if unsure use a list like Black Vipers.

Next install a GOOD configurable firewall...one that allows you to configure both ports and apps/services. Try Kerio PF or Sygate Pro.

Next Adaware and Spybot.

Next get a proxy like the Proxomitron or Privoxy.

Test youself (Shields Up) and grab any freebie/security advice:
