How to turn off auto-gamma in nVidia drivers?

Whenever a 3D app is loaded, the driver seems to automatically up the gamma slightly. While it is probably there to compensate for the default gamma being too low for most games, it can always be adjusted in the game. The anonying thing is whenever a 3D app crashes, the decktop stays at the higher gamma level, and the nVidia driver config does not correct it after pressing restore hardware defaults. Sometimes running a game and quitting will fix it, but not all the time. The gamma change even kicks in while loading some 3D accelerated windowed apps like the Warcraft3 level editor. Is there any way to turn that auto gamma off?

Hmm thats strange. I actually was frustrated that there was no way to up gamma in just d3d/opengl with Nvidia drivers when I first switched from 3dfx. I was under the impression that it was not possible, and looking through the drivers several times I still do not see where it is :/

With any Nvidia card I lower the gamma level slightly for the desktop. Just enable the desktop icon and have the desktop color saved. When you find the desktop has too much gamma just click on the utility icon and use the custom color setting to fix it back to normal. I don't get any crashes, but sometimes after a long session of Unreal2003 upon returning to the desktop my gamma level is not adjusted down.

You're right, there is no separate D3D/OGL/Desktop gamma settings in nVidia drivers. But what I'm talking about the the drivers automatically turning up the gamma. You can tell this is going on by alt-tabbing out of any openGL game to the desktop, and the desktop will be overly bright.
