How To Turn Of System Sounds?

I wanted to record a MD tonight but i dont wanna screw up the recording with my instant messanger chimes and my ticks when i surf the forums..

Anyone know how to turn of the system sounds, but still have my winamp play mp3s while i record my MDs?

Btw i am running windows 2000.

control panel - sound and multimedia or whatever, select no sounds for scheme

umm.. all Windows sounds you can turn off from "control panel > sounds", but sounds of those programs you have to turn off from the program's options.

your right about that one, i still hear noise with trillian with i am chatting with my friend.. Terrible.... =(
