how to turn of a laptop screen?

i usually turn of the monitor on my desktop when i am not using it but how would i turn of a laptop screen without going into standby mode? i am using toshiba a15-s129.

That his problem. When he closes the lid the laptop goes in to standby automatically.

Try having a look around here: Display Properties -> Screen Saver tab -> Power button
Maybe you'll find something to disable that function.
 
On my e-Machines laptop I have an "Advanced" tab in the Control Panel's Power options. It has drop-down menus letting me choose what happens when I close the lid, push the sleep button, or push the power button. I have it set to "Do nothing" when I close the lid, so all it does it turn off the monitor. Check to see if you have something like that in your control panel.
