How to turn a system on without a case?

Well, this sounds a bit stupid but how can I turn on my system without a case? I'm talking about the power, reset, HDD LED, etc. These things are connected to cases as we all know. Say, If I want to test the system before I install in a case, how do I do it? Is there any switch for sale? If so please inform me.

The functions that you mentioned have output pins connections on the Motherboard.

Look at the Mobo Manual.

To start the computer you can short for a second the two pins that should be connected to the On button.

Be careful to short the right pins otherwise, you might Fry something.

Look at your mobo's header switch connections, just short the 2 pins using a condutive metal object (i.e. flat head screwdriver) on the two [pins that are labeled "power switch". This goes the same for the reset switch, just short them and your system should do a hard reset. I do this all the time, testing the system before putting it inside the case. HDD LED's are different, you really need to connect the LED's of your case (if you can pull it out)

I have a collection of leds, switches and speakers from junked out cases. I usually hook up a p/s and a speaker when testing on the bench. Having a spare switch means only having to find the right pins once if you do multiple starts.

I once had a computer without a case for a couple months. I just had it layed out on the desk and the drives stacked on top of eachother. I'd just touch the two wires together.

Ahhh to be young and dumb.....I miss those days.

I did keep my room cold as h3ll though.

A lot of the newer boards (mine included) such as the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra have power and reset switches right on the mobo for just that purpose. That, and the Diagnostic LEDs are the greatest thing.

it only takes a screwdriver and 5 minutes at a local PC recycle place to take the power switch out of a trashed case.
