how to treat a stomach virus?

Aharami

Lifer
i think my gf has a stomach virus. she's throwing up and going to the bathroom (#2) constantly. Cant keep anything down in her stomach. and because of that she's getting weaker. I tried giving her some chicken soup broth and toasted bread. didnt work. got her some pedialyte to help her renew some nutrition in her body...but she can only drink so much of that.

what medicine can I get her so she feels a bit better and can keep some food in her stomach.

Usually you have to let it pass.

Literally.

But just be there for her; it sucks to be sick and all alone.

Sounds like food poisoning.

There is nothing you can do except wait it out.

It will only last 2-8 hours.

cranberry juice may or may not help, also she needs to drink a lot of water to compensate for dehydration. It should pass within 2 days I think. At least thats what I heard

Yep..can't do much for it but ride it out. If the cramping gets severe they can inject her with morphine at an ER.

Keep her on clear liquids, ice, broths, and Jello. It shouldn't last more than 2 days. If it's anymore than that without feeling better, or if she gets pain in her lower back as well, take her to a hospital to be checked out.

You could try Pepto-Bismol or equivalent, in an attempt to counteract the nausea. Anti-diarrheal medications might also help to reduce fluid loss. You're pretty much stuck treating symptoms, though.

Nothing but clear fluids, little by little, until she can keep everything down and isn't having diarrhea. If she goes too long without holding any fluids down, she could get dehydrated and might require an IV. That's unusual, but keep it in mind. Don't give her any medicine, just keep giving her clear fluids (including water, 7-up/Sprite, Gatorade, white grape juice, that sort of thing). When the worst has passed, she can start out on easy to digest foods like toast without butter, plain white rice, banana, oatmeal, that sort of thing. She'll feel like crap for a day after it passes. She needs to rest and rehydrate. She might find it helpful to eat some yogurt (live culture type) when she can start eating so she can repopulate her gut with beneficial microbes.

Another thing, anything red or black comes out of either end, take her to the doctor. That's indicative of potential internal bleeding, never a good thing.

Also, sometimes sugars can aggravate diarrhea, so she might need to stick to plain water at first. When she can, she needs to get some electrolytes replaced using gatorade/pedialyte/bananas, etc.

Perhaps a visit to the doctor?

That's too obvious for the OP to grasp apparently.

apparantly you dont understand that doctors offices arent open at 6:30pm on a saturday

we usually consult the doctor if the symptoms persist after a day or so. she just started feeling sick this afternoon. too soon to consult the doctor IMO. I just wanted some opinions here...and thanks to those who offered up something worthwhile to say.

anyways, she's doing a little better now. I just got her some Immodium AD. lets see how she feels.
