I'm trying to get a trip together from March 9th to the 18th in Ireland. I want to get the airfare figured out first and start planning the rest of the trip from there. I'm leaving from Louisville KY(SDF)

Where should I be looking for airfare? I swear I saw decent flights for 450-500 a few days ago but now I can't find anything. I'd like to find something with American but I dont need to. Everything I'm getting back now is over $500 and wants me to fly back on a flight leaving at 6:30 am on thee 18th(the 17th is St patricks day so this might be a problem)

Ugh, this has got to be one of the more frustrating things I've done in the past few months.

That sure sounds funny to me. Of course if you are not returning to the USA, it's probably OK.

kayak.com for tickets

-compares airfares from every site on the web
-way easier and quicker to use than orbitz, expedia, etc.
-can sort by price, length of flight, stops, flexible dates, etc

once you are done there, head over to tripadvisor.com to look for lodging or fodors.com's forums to get advice on what to do.

good luck and happy travels!

Especially if you look 'ethnic.'

Luckily I'm whitebread american male. And per the rest of my original comment, I'm going to get the pictures and documents together and go put in my passport application next monday. Earlier if I get everything together.

Thanks, I'm checking it out, though I might have already looked at kayak. I've been trying the matrix.itasoftware.com site as well. The plan is to get there, drive around and do hostels, maybe a night or two and a decent hotel in dublin. We may also look at booking a .01 euro trip through ryanair to mainland europe for a few days, though at this point we are thinking more of staying in ireland.

Thank you.

Please disregard my thank you, people were at least bumping my thread when they thought I was going to go without a passport.

In addition to kayak, I love using Mobissimo.com The euro-carriers are more comfortable than US carriers.

You know, the psychotically low price airlines (like Ryan Air) make me wish we had something comparable in the US. Look at these deals. http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/

In all honestly CALL a travel agent. I get better deals this way and they can manipulate the flights a lot better than you can.

Plus if you have a group of people you can get a discount. Better hurry on the passport though.

Shannon or Dublin?

Dublin, might be able to do shannon if we need to, but we are planning on spending st patricks day in dublin

Shannon is cheaper to fly to. If you plan on staying only in Dublin then it isn't worth the effort of having the take a train or bus over there. However because the cost of living in Dublin is so high, and the flight to Shannon is cheaper, you could probably tour the whole country and get to the capitol on the 17th and still spend the same as you would if you flew there directly and stayed for 9 days.

Don't rely on the 6 weeks. I got my passport after 6 weeks, a day before my flight left. Go get it as soon as possible.

As for airfare, Aer Lingus is usually the cheapest but I stumbled upon a good deal with an american carrier (forget which one, United, Continental, or American) and payed $350 one way from Seattle. So like others have said search multiple websites, but if you're going to sit around playing with dates and times to try to lower the fare you're better off spending your time at the Aer Lingus site.

Actually, if you rent a flat outside of Dublin1 (I suggest Rathmines), then expect to pay about $300Euro for a 7 day rental. Add about 20-40E for groceries for the week.

Going to restaurants off Grafton will kill your budget, but if you stick to pubs outside the "core", then you'll expect to pay no more then 4-5E for a meal, not including alcohol.

If you're to be going to Dublin expecting a massive party, be prepared to be a bit disappointed. St Patrick's Day is certainly not the wild boozefest portrayed by NAmerican TV.. While Temple Bar is busy (but when ISN'T Temple Bar busy), it's more of a day of reflection and rememberance...
