How to transfer files between PCs via 56k modem?

I'm at my parent's place, and I need to get some semi-large files from my laptop to their PC. The problem is, my laptop only has a hard drive, and my parent's computer doesn't have a network card. So, my only solution seems to be trying to transfer files via 56k modems.

My laptop is running Windows XP, and the PC is running Windows 98SE. Is there anything better than using Hyperterminal or something like that? I haven't done anything like that in ages. I looked in the Anandtech FAQ, but that all involved using NICs... Thanks in advance!!

well, if you don't have nic on either machine,

best thing is to use floppies.

compress them and segment them using something like winrar.

else you can connect both machines to the internet and transfer it with irc or something.

I imagine your laptop has some type of nic, why not pick up a cheap usb/ethernet adapter and a crossover cable?

Either that or one of those laplync type usb-to usb networking cables that usually comes with the transferring software.

thanks for the replies -

yeah my laptop is one of those barebones lightweights... no floppy :(

since i figure this is a one time thing (who doesn't have a NIC these days?) i'd rather not have to spend any extra money at compusa. especially after seeing my cc bill...

i have about 100mb to transfer, so i was hoping to set up a modem to modem connection and let it run overnight?

Following Spidey advice. Go to a local computer store buy DB25 to DB25 cable (DB25 is the parallel port plug on the computer).

Instruction for actual transfer here: Direct Cable Connection.

i think a usb nic and cross-over cable would be good. the null modem approach is cheaper. but i find the usb nic will be more useful in the long run.

Both machines have USB right? Go buy one of those USB thumb drives, 60$ for a 128mb one at frys, then use it, if you dont need it for anything else, return it.
