how to transfer data from a notebook to a desktop?

I'm about to go buy my first laptop computer before I go on a long trip. I want to be able to transfer a couple gigs worth mp3's to my notebook from my desktop. How do I go about doing that? More to the poing, what do I need to have before I can do that? I just want to know what other cables, connectors, etc I need so I can buy it all at once. Thanks.

All you really need is a PCMCIA ethernet card for your laptop. Then a nic card for your desktop system and a crossover cable. If you all ready got a home network you don't need the crossover cable then.

What HalfCrazy said.

There is also firewire connections if per chance your laptop has a firewire port and no ethernet card

the best part is, if there is no network built in, the chance of firewire being there is slim to none.. only because firewire is newer than a network port.

Well quite a few notebooks already have built in ethernet connectors so you wouldn't need a PCMCIA Ethernet card, if that is the case.

Your desktop of course would need an ethernet connection as well if it does not already. You may need to purchase a desktop ethernet adapter as well.

To directly link them you will need a crossover ethernet cable. Which isn't exactly a common type of cable in stores, it would be cheapest if you got a nerd friend who has the material to make his own cable and could make one for you.
