How to throttle my roommates bandwidth?

A friend of mine moved into my house and has been downloading WAY too much data. We get 60GB a month, and he's been downloading more than 100GB a month. I've asked him multiple times to cut back and he hasn't listened, so I want to cut his bandwidth down.

I'm using a wrt54gl with the tomato firmware on it.

I don't want to completely cut his bandwidth off, I just want to reduce his speeds so he's not downloading as much.

I assume I need to set up QoS for this?

unfortunately, any QoS mechanism you implement is only a temporary fix...hell find a way around it. you should tackle the root issue, choosing only respectful individuals to share your home.

i assume these huge transfers are from torrents...keep in mind if/when someone gets wise to these activities, they'll be looking for you, not him.

I've never seen QoS work properly on consumer grade routers. The easiest way is to just limit his overall bandwidth on his port, though I'm not sure what equipment would be best for that.

Does he pay you rent? Does he pay for a share of the Internet bill?

Perhaps, the roommate should get internet in his name. That way when people start asking questions, they'll be looking for the right person.

Another OP, give you room a swift kick to the balls if the roommate keeps this up. Technology won't solve this kind of problem. A more "hands on" approach might be the only solution.

hahah, this would most definitely work!

please post back after following the said technique and give us the results 🙂

Does Tomato track bandwidth usage? If so, once he hits 30GB, set up an access restriction so he can't access the Internet, only local resources unless he forks over more money for the bill. (it's easy to do with Linksys firmware, not sure about Tomato)

Give him the bill for the broadband connection. If he wants to go over the limit for the connection, he can pay the fees. If he refuses, then simply remove his access to the router until he agrees to stop downloading more than 30GB per month (half of the service plan limit).

We have a saying in the IT field: Never try to solve an HR problem with technology. Take away his access entirely if he isn't willing to cover the excess fees.

Got a couple of options...

1. Tell him he can keep this up, but the internet goes in his name.
2. If he refuses, tell him to gtfo unless he stops.
3. Any of the technological fixes.

Don't try and find a workaround when confronting the problem straight on is your only solution.
