how to test switch is working fine?

i installed this 24port switch at a friend's place:

it works fine for the past 2 months, now he's complaining some machines dont get internet while some have slow internet. last time this happened, it was because there was a loopback. VirtualLarry suggested i look up Spanning Tree Protocol. im confused....if an unmanaged switch supports STP, then the switch is smart enough to ignore a loopback?
2nd question, if no loopback exists when i visit him tomorrow, is there a stress test to make sure the switch is fine?

someone from another forum suggests using "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -t" to test the switch

If you have loop backs than your network comes to a screeching hault. Not a slowdown but just plain unresponsive. STP should be turned on by default.

If you can arrive there with the computers that are in question actually exhibiting the issue you can see, it will make troubleshooting easier. I'd change switch ports first on the offending machines. I'd also bring a second test switch with me that I know works. That way I can bypass his in house switch to take that piece of the equipment out of the equation.

If it turns out the problem is still there after the above, it's probably router/modem/network provider issue.
