How to test a PSU

Hello all,

I pulled out my PSU because I'm pretty sure that it's the reason why my computer will not turn on.

The problem:
(in case you know something I don't) One morning my computer showed absolutely no sign of life. To put it in car terms. The ignition wouldn't even turn on let alone the engine turning over. The only thing that would happen when I pressed the power button was that I heard a slight click as if it was about to start and then IMMEDIATELY nothing. Nada. no fans, no heatsinks, no lights, no display, nothing.

So this problem has led me to believe that it must be the PSU since nothing is powering on or even trying to power on.

The question: How do i see if my PSU actually works without plugging it into my existing rig? Is there some sort of industry trick?

Cliff notes: PSU might be broken, how do I test?

A couple of guides to help (maybe). I know, if it doesn't come on at all how do you test it? There are a few things that can cause the behavior you describe, if you get something trying to start up (HDD, fans) the PSU may well not be the culprit (processor seems the most common cause if hardware failure, from what I've read). Make sure all of your connections are solid first and foremost, that's the more likely cause. Anyway, good luck.

Borrow a friend's PSU and test the rest of your rig with it.
