Bess is an upstream proxy server. Unless your network administrators are complete fools, you will not be able to get around it.

Yeah, its hard to get through the ones that are on the server level, if not impossible. THere MAY be some back door, but I doubt it....

Would something with a proxy help, or no?

I suggest you edit that out, HybridSquirrel. It's not a good idea to be posting ways to circumvent security measures on this forum.

Yes, there is a simple way. Set up a proxy at your home, assuming bess doesn't block it.

But why would you want to bypass bess? Porn? Showing off? P2P? Fun?

Kid, if you don't know what a proxy is, then don't bother asking for help, because you don't have any business bypassing one.

Smells like cencorship to me Drew. I reckon it's ok give him a hint at least, I mean, what's the internet all about anyway? Fight the man I say.

A proxy is a program which will forward your connection for you. You make a request to the proxy server, it makes a request to a site, the site responds to the proxy, the proxy responds to you. If you could find a proxy which is allowed by the filter...

Yes, but this forum in particular has previously locked threads because of content such as this. I'm all for censorship on private forums, if the owner/management so desires. There's always the rest of the internet, which should not be censored as a whole, IMHO. But that's a bit off topic, I guess. ;)

I'm personally opposed to this *specific* question because I used to work as a network administrator in a public school district. I had fun writing up suspension recommendations for everyone who attempted to breach security or repeatedly access forbidden websites. Schools, I believe, have a duty to protect the students (including censorship) from pornography, etc.

That said, I have a problem with companies that filter access to trivial websites such as hotmail.com... employee access to the internet should be monitored, but not filtered, IMHO. But that's just my opinion I guess. I'm rather vocal about it.

Bypassing bess using proxy is easier than you think. The key is finding or setting up a proxy that is not censored by bess. There are commercial ones that you could use, and there are also free ones. But be aware that free ones are usually SLOW in terms of response and bandwidth. However, you must realize that bess is probably ahead of the game, and these proxies are mostly blocked. Therefore, finding a proxy would be difficult.

The other solution is to set up your own proxy. For this to work, you need two thing: a computer acting as server and an connection not censored by bess. Once you have both, its time to set up your own proxy. How proxy is set up and implemented would be up to your imagination. The solution provided by BadThad (www.unipeak.com) is one of the many ways that a proxy could be used. Unfortunately, as mentioned in the first paragraph, this is one is already blocked.

GeekDrew is right. This forum is not for this kind of discussion. I can only point you in the right direction. For the rest, google is your best friend.

No such thing as censorship on a privately owned forum.

I used to run a proxy on my box at my apartment at my last job because they monitored which sites I went to (well technically I did the monitoring since I was the sys admin but still) I just installed dante (linux proxy) and I never caught any flac for hitting AT :D

Also, are you in college? Seems ridiculous that a University would block web site access. My school is only interested in blocking service access (FTP P2P etc) on their network (to limit legal liability and preserve bandwidth for legitimate purposes)

Bess is normally found in high schools and public institutions.

Yeah, but at my high school they wouldn't let you plug into the network with your own computer and they had SRP's on all of the computers, just seemed weird to me that they would let him bring his own box to school and plug into the network. That being said, if he is at a high school and he is inquiring here how to defeat their proxy he's probably going to get caught :D

There are a lot of high schools that let just about anyone plug into the network... and there are many more that don't allow it, but would never know if someone did.
