How to tell if you have the new IntelliMouse Optical v3?

I just bought an IntelliMouse Optical from staples and I'm having the jumpy pointer problem where an even partially fast mouse movement makes the cursor goes nuts. I heard the new v3 mice don't have this problem though b/c of a 6000 tracking rate? How can I tell if I have the newer model or not?

Look on the bottom of the mouse, if its the 3.0 it'll say
Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 USB and Ps/2 Compatible

If its the older one it will most likely say
Intellimouse Explorer USB and Ps/2 Compatible

Also the newer side buttons are about 1/2 the size of the older one.
1/2"-3/4 tall on the old mouse and on the new one about 1/4" tall
this is a height measurement (up/down)

SpeedTester: Do you know if that's the same for the IntelliMouse Optical? (not the Explorer) If so, then I've only got the USB and PS/2 compatible writing on mine... :(

Braves: How far down the box does it say the scan rate? I can't find it on my box so I just want to make sure that I'm still sane (ie can read the box and know that it's nowhere to be found) :)

On the back of the box, midway through #1 (starts with most Powerful Optical Technology in the World)... bleh bleh bleh bladdy bladdy blah, It accurately tracks movement by scanning your desktop 6000 times per second - more than two times faster then any other mouse!

I bought two at Staples. The boxes were V.2, however both had a sticker with "New - Upgraded Resolution". and had the newest Intelli-mouse software. God alone knows just what Staples is doing with old stock.

Ah, thanks Braves...I think I've gotten a first gen one or at best, 2nd gen mouse, yeesh... do you guys know how hard it is to break in Virtual Pool 3 with a jumpy mouse :D

Anyways, that Boxing day sale from staples was probably to clear out their old mice, HOPEFULLY to make way for some new V3s....I think I'll go back and see if I can get it exchanged, thanks everyone for the info!

I have both version of the mouse. V2 of the mouse is a little bigger that the v3. On the bottom of the v3 mouse it clearly printed Intellimouse explorer 3.0 usb and ps/2 compatible. Also the thumb button on the v3 is alot smaller.

Both the Explorer3 and Optical1.1 versions have $10 rebates. I can get the Optical one for $20. We'll see.

According to Staples website the Explorer3 mouse they carry captures at 1500/s while the Optical1.1 captures at 6000 and costs much less. Weird.

So, has any of you experienced cursor jumping when playing fps games with the 6000 capture/s mouse?

Erwin: So the IntelliMouse Optical goes up to v1.1 and not v3? I guess I've sort of been asking the wrong question then, which is probably why people have been telling me about the Explorer and not the normal Intellimouse Optical... Does the v1.1 have a different marking on it than the v1?

I have the Intellimouse Explorer v3.0 and I've not had problem one. I running WinXP (it's off the hook) Intellimouse works incredible in FPS games. Although you might have to turn down the games mouse sensitivity. I like the 5 button job too. Mine came from Best Buy $49.99. In my opinion the only mouse I would be comfortable paying $50 for. (It includes Software)

If you need to know the version, look on the bottem of the mouse and look just above the UPC (if that's what it is???? newbie) Mine says....."Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 and USB Compatible"

Yes. The v3 is the Explorer one and v1.1 is the Optical version. The latest versions of either mouse should say 6000 captures/s or something of that sort on the box. According to Staples.com they only carry the earlier version of Explorer3(1500 cap/s).

From what I can tell from the mouse descriptions at Microsoft.com, both Intellimouse Optical and Explorer are identical except for the fact that the Explorer is for right handers only and Microsoft justified this with a higher price. If all else being equal I would get Intellimouse Optical.

Yah, i was wondering what was the difference between the optical and explorer. Actaully, when Microsoft introduced the Optical and Explorer originally, Microsoft said the explorer was their "best of the best", and that's why it cost 75$ at the time when the optical was only around 50$ or so. Now of course they have the wireless and bladdy blah blah, but maybe there's more different about these two mouses that we just can't see. Either way, I sent in my mail in rebate today and i'm confidant i'll end up with the 10$ off, so i just got a great mouse for 10$ yay!

It was a tough choice between Logitech's Marble Mouse and theMicrosoft Intellimouse Optical. I liked the fact that Microsoft's can do 6000 captures/s, but I was so used to trackballs that I ended up going with Logitech. After using my coupon I ended up paying only $20 for it.

I was a bit skeptical about optical mouse or trackballs. I've heard about the dreaded cursor jumps. I would be ok with it if I can play UT or Quake3:arena with out the cursor going bananas on me when I do critical moves. I'm happy to say that this trackball is awesome. No matter how fast I flick the ball the cursor never goes berserk on me. Scrolling web pages is smooth, too. My only concern is, unlike Microsoft's where they used metal ball bearings to support the ball, Logitech's has plastic or something. Knowing how aggresive I use a trackball, I'm afraid I could ware it down faster than normal. Only time will tell. I'm hoping they're made of pearls. They're really shiny.

One funny thing is Logitech's trackballs are the only optical input device that doesn't use an LED. Can someone explain why this is. Is Logitech's trackballs so sophisticated that it doesn't need illumination?

Alright!! I got my mouse exchanged for the v1.1 :) I can finally break in VP3! Now to see if I can make my guy spin like a top in Q3 & UT...
Thanks for all the help everyone!
BTW, in case anybody is wondering, I got a feel of the v3 Explorer, and it's MUCH improved over the first version.
