Noise is probably going to be the only way to determine when it is going to die. Most fans last between 3 and 5 years on average. If you're ambient temperature in your system is quite high, the time before failure might decrease to 2 to 4 years.

If your system starts to spontaneously reboot for no apparent reason then I look at the cpu fan first and work from there.
