Inspiron 5100, the HD is Toshiba MK3021GAS 30GB. Very slow, a lot of clicking, but most things work. Any diagnostics?

call dell and they'll tell you to goto support.dell.com and download their diagnostic for your machine.

if you got clicking your HD is about to go out completely. I have a Inspiron 5100 I bought used on here that came with a hitach which was basicly DOA. Started off with several clicks here and there and within a day or 2 it failed altogether with continuous clicks.

Backup and replace it.

Yeah make sure to get a 5400 rpm drive. 7200 is really a waste of money so do not bother with it.

Sniper 82-

Excellent response. Your positive the 1st one you mention the samsung spinpoint M, and the 2.5" form factor is an exact fit for my Dell Inspiron 5100? I trust you, not dell and their too often propriatary parts. I can't bring anything thing up on the screen now after I enter safe or normal mode. I assume its went totally belly up now.
