How to tell if HD is doa?

If your motherboard's bios doesn't see it, and if your computer is making funny clicking sounds not from a fan.

Possibly if you get errors when installing your operating system, although that could be a number of things.

If your motherboard isn't detecting the drive, make sure you have your jumpers and IDE/SATA cables properly configured.
And make sure your CMOS is set to recognize the drive.
