Is there a way to tell just by looking at it?

My new system wont boot up, I have everything installed properly, but when I hit the power button, nothing happens. If the processor is dead, will the system even power up at all? I tried clearing the cmos(though I'm not sure if I did it properly, can anyone tell me the exact steps? I changed the jumper, hit the power button, nothing happened, changed the jumper back) and also removed the battery for a couple seconds to see if that did anything, but it still wont power up. Do I need to leave the battery out for longer?

I've triple checked to make sure nothing was shorted, everything is seated properly, the jumpers for the power switch and stuff are in correctly, I'm not sure what else to try. I don't have another Athlon cpu laying around to try in it to see if that is the problem.

Any suggestions?
Heres what I have:
Epox 8k3a+
Athlon xp 1800+
512 mb Corsair XMS PC 3000
Thermaltake Volcano 7+
300W power supply

thanks for any help guys.

check your power led hdd led etc...wires again

this is fustrating but if those wires are backwards then she won't even blink at you

this happened to me on two computers i built and getting them backward won't hurt but she won't light

hope this helps

I've already done this. I've had them in every which way possible, and I get nothing. I am 100% sure they are in correctly.

Lets assume for a second that the processor IS dead. Will that cause a system to not power up whatsoever? I've never encountered a dead processor so I am not exactly sure what happens... if anything. No fans, no LEDs, no nothing. Is that the sign of a dead cpu, assuming everything else is installed and plugged in correctly?

Dead CPU's won't prevent a the system from turning on, but you might not get any error beeps. Pull the board, set it on a static bag or box, insert a known good video card, a known good stick of RAM. Reset the CMOS, then short the PWR_SW pins and see if she'll spin up and post.

Well I just pulled everything except the video card, RAM and processor/HSF.

It does power up normally...

I'm gonna add a hard drive and see what happens next.
