How to tell if a CPU is fried?

Without having a spare rig to test it in?

I know for sure that my PSU is fried, I'm just wondering if it took my CPU along with it. There is a discoloration on the ceramic, right above the core.

I dont think theres really a way to tell if your CPU is fried unless you see physical damage. Your going to have to wait till you replace your PSU and just try it again, if you dont have a spare CPU.

It might help to know what happened? If your PSU went bad I dont see it making your CPU go bad maybe the board if I had to choose between the two.

Bought a new case last Thursday, moved all my equipment over. Worked fine until last night, started having cooling issues with my CPU (never had that before), and eventually the power supply just shut off. (no shutdown screen, etc). Turned it back on, after two seconds, shut back down, with a huge crackle, and an arc of electricity went down the back of the case.

I know the PSU is bad, I'm suspecting my CPU, motherboard, and video card, just because of the arc of electricity and apparent ferocity of the shut down.

Sounds pretty grim......:frown: but, get a new PS and process of elimination will narrow it down. You have to have power to really tell. Sorry about your issue! I wouldn't wish this even on my worst enemies! Good Luck!

*shrug* Damned if I know... "Wapao"... no name case. I just bought an Enermax from Newegg.

I think the CPU itself is fine, the discoloration I was look at is normal.

All I can do now is order a new PSU, and hope that the mobo and video card are okay.

lol ;)

hopefully its not dead, and only the psu is and the vidcard/mobo are ok
ive heard many times where a faulty psu manages to take out the whole system

ive even heard of a faulty modem take out some systems (something about a power spike or along those lines caused by the modem....dont remember exactly heh)

Did it let out any of that magic smoke? :Q Once the magic smoke is gone out of any electrical part, it's fried! Just can't find a way to get it back in.:disgust:
