Hi Y'all,

My office runs a Dell server for our DHCP and an active directory file storage. They want to do periodic backups of critical data on the internal tape drive. I have never done this before and really don't know where to start. The most I've done is periodic Norton Ghost backups on peer-to-peer networks. We have 10 total work stations running Win2k on all of them and logging on to our domain. Could someone help me figure out what I should be backing up and how I should go about doing it. Obviously with 10 work stations and a server, I can't back everything up so I neeed to know what is pivotal if on station happens to completely die. Thanks in advance.
As Always,
D

Backing up a Win2k server is pretty easy, so don't panic.
Start>Programs>Acessories>System Tools>Backup.

Generally you want to back up a couple of things.
1) The system state. This includes the Active Directory database, Registry, COM, bootfiles and sysvol. This is the most important portion of the any 2k DC to backup. Do it regularly.
2) Any databases of network services (eg WINS, DHCP, DNS, etc). You can find your DHCP database at (%SystemRoot%\system32\Dhcp) . Just back up the entire folder.
3) Any other data that is essential. Documents, etc.

I don't know if MSBackup will backup the clients as well, but tape drives typically come with their own software. What do you have for a tapedrive, and do you see any software called BackupExec, Retrospect or NovaStor?

Yeah, if any of the stuff on the clients needs backing up you might want to have them save it to a network share on the DC, you can back it up from there, assuming it's not a huge amount of data.
