HOW TO TAKE OFF THE HS OF THE NORTHBRIDGE?!?!?!

x86

How do you take off the HS from the Northbridge? I want to put some thermal compound for better thermal control.

Thanks

They typically have a pair of plastic push pins, or metal clips holding them on. Which motherboard??

x86,
I concur with Andy. If you're not oc'ing the heck out of your system, you probably don't need to mess with your northbridge HS. However, if you still want to, and you can't find any push pins or clips, you may try the old credit card trick (sliding a credit card under the HS).

I want to go from 1.8 to 2.4. (100->133FSB) Would a fan be more adviseable than AS3?

Thanks

Presumably you have an i845 chipset based system.

Don't bother....your chipset is not holding you back.

FWIW I have not touched my i845 chipset heatsik and I am running 150FSB.

The plastic push pins are the most common meathod, for those just look on the back of your motherboard & you just need to pinch the pins closed to get them to pull out. Get a pair of needlenose pliers to help ya (just be careful with using metal tools near sensitive circuit boards....real easy to break them 🙁).

I would not suggest to do this unless you have a fresh set of plastic pins to put back on, many times the pins become crushed and unusable after you take them off, take it from experience, You have to be really carefull.

OK, i850. I say don't do it.

It would be the RDRAM clock generators holding you back (if at all), not the chipset.
