when i dont use vista for a while and then come back, its like my pc is shut off it makes no noise at all...then when i move the mouse it comes back

how can i stop this from happening?

That's sleep mode, you can turn this off through the power options.

Control panel, power options, change when the computer sleeps

alright i put it on the high performance plan also...makes no difference since this is not a laptop and i dont need to conserve battery or anything right

I like it, for once hibernation actually works, and on my machine at least, it resumes very fast. (Sub 5 seconds)

no there is a command line option to disable it! I dont remember what it is but i'm sure if you google it OR
there was a tweak about it right on these forums
search!

I agree that I like having my machines auto-sleep and eventually hibernate when not in use. It saves electricty and I have absolutley no reason to leave the machine running for hours doing nothing. I've even configured uTorrent to turn off any torrent once it has reached a certian seeding ratio, so I can leave the machine with plenty of activity going and trust it will go to sleep and power down when everything is completed.

Instituting aggressive power saving policies on my home computers has already put a signficant dent in my electric bill. Resuming from hibernation/sleep is virtually instantaneous as well. I don't have to reach for the power button either. Most BIOSes support resuming on a keypress. I've taught my girlfriend to just whack the spacebar and her machine blinks into action.

Why people insist on having their idle desktops whirring away even when there is no real reason is beyond me.

Vista doesn't seem to have a clear "disable hibernation". It allows you to set like 999 minutes or something.
😕
You can set it to "never" in advanced power settings.
