How to stop my laptop hard drive?

I am running some P2P file sharing (BitComet) on my laptop. To save the laptop hard drive, I installed BitCommet and its incoming directory on the removable hard drive. However, I noticed that the hard drive light of my laptop turns on from time to time, and the laptop hard drive "click" frequently. Since the download is saved to the removable hard drive, is there any way to stop the laptop hard drive? Thanks!

As long as it isn't leaving the HDD on for any period of time, it will only end up shortening battery life by a few minutes.

Actually I am not very concerned about the battery life. I am worried that continuous usage of the little laptop hard drive can ruin the 2.5" drive
quickly. That is why I am using a removable drive----but still that can not stop the running of laptop hard drive.
