How to start putting my recorded tapes on the computer?

i have a digital video camera (sony) from last year and have taped many many family events (like streaming video, is that what its called?). I would like to somehow be able to play them into the computer and store each "movie" as a file so i can play it back on the computer. What kind of hardware to i need to buy to make this possible?

I have the following alrdy:

a computer
my video camera
a firewire card with one connector on the back. (im guessing this is a very old firewire card)

I dont have a cable i think i would need to somehow connect the video camera to the firewire card. What kind of cable do i need?

I think this is how i would play the movie into the computer, is that right? what kind of software is needed for this, or does windows XP pro have something built in alrdy?

HELP! 🙂

Your DV Camera didn't come w/some standard edition capture software? Actually...the Firewire card should have come w/the software now that I think about it.

you need a firewire cable. make sure you have a cable that has the right number of pins on each end. i think there's a 4-pin and 6-pin (correct me if i'm wrong). most video cameras have a 4-pin connection, while your firewire card in your PC might have a 6-pin connection.
