okay, just signed the lease on my new apt with a roommate

What is the best way to split the utilities?

I was thinking me:
electric, water
roommate:
phone, gas

sound correct? we are splitting it either way, so I don't suppose it matters much

why dont you just add up the total cost everymonth and split it?

The fact that you need to ask this worries me about your ability to live by yourself.

Edit: If you're worried about your roommate skipping out on you, then I guess you could put two of the utilities in his name, otherwise it's probably simplest to have them all in one name, yours or his.

why do people even come on here and post questions like this? is there just a total lack of common sense?

I agree with Mogul and Rallispec. Me and my roomate split everything in half. I usually take care of the bills and then he will pay me back. We don't bother with figureing things out to minute details cuz its a mess all over just a few bucks. He even pays half of my gas and parking since he tends to go with me to kendo and buy food and whatnot.

[edit] As to who's name its under, the more responsible one 😛 Who ever is more prompt in getting the bills made out and what not. Its not good to have electricity cut because the one who's name its under forgot to pay the bill 😛

Usually right down the middle.

But in my case, since I'm at work 8 hours of the day and asleep for most of the night, I find myself with little to no utility usage. Only about 6 hours a day in electricty, and a shower daily. I'm trying to swing 35% of the total, since I dont use A/C, shut off computer at night, shut off all my lights at night.

But then I'm just a pro-rating bastard.

dont put them all in your name.
i *was* that dumbass once upon a time.
all the harder when its with *friends*
