I have the bug and want to upgrade to a SSD as my main system drive.

What I have:

I have a 1TB HD that is divided into several partitions - C:, D:, E:, etc.

I want to install a new SSD and move the C: drive only (and not any of the other partitions) onto the new SSD.

Is a good way to do this to install the SSD and then clone only the C: partition over to it, then remove the old 1TB HD, reboot and let Win 7 Pro 64 bit figure the rest out?

Ideally then I would reinstall the 1TB HD and delete the old C: partition and use the drive as a storage only drive.

Is this the correct way to do this?

That bug - it's dangerously contagious these days.
What I'd suggest is, given the capability:
Just connect both, install a fresh copy of the OS on the SSD and let it act as the single bootable drive. After that you could just delete/merge/repartition your former OS partition. I believe there are non-destructive ways to merge partitions.

The main point of my advice being the clean install bit.
