How to spilt up the rent fairly?

Ok. I live in a townhouse with 3 other people. One person is moving out and we are now struggling to find a 4th roommate. I found another townhouse about 3 miles away from school and we would be paying only about $8 more in rent split 3 ways instead of 4; ($1695 four ways in our current town house 5 blocks away from school vs. $1295 3 ways). But here is the situation.

Let's say there is ME, friend A, and friend B.

-Me and friend A have always roomed together.

-At the new townhouse we are planning on going to, it's the same two bedroom townhouse.

-Obviously, since there is now only 3 people, one person is most likey going to have his own room

-Friend A will never room with Friend B, only me since we've been buddies for a long time

-Back at the old townhouse, since we got the bigger room, ME and Friend A would pay for our 6mbp DSL connection.

How can we make it where it would be fair for us 3 to spilt the rent since friend B will most likely get his own room. Make him pay for the DSL? Make him pay more in rent?
Let's try NOT to include a 4th person. What do you think is the best feasible way to make it fair for all of us? Ask any question and I will answer them.

****UPDATE

Here is the link of the layout.

Townhouse

My friend and I plan to room in Bedroom 2, and the 3rd person gets Bedroom 1.

divide rent based on square feet of only bedrooms. Then split portions amongst how many are in each room.

Each person pays 1/3 of every bill. It's not friend b's fault you decided to get a place with 2 rooms and that you two are living in the same room.

Split it up more or less evenly, since the majority of the house is common areas that you all have equal access to.

Yeah but Friend B also has a right to find a 4th roommate. OR, find his own place to live.

And friend B has never lifted a finger when it came to looking for places to live. He watches hentai and plays video games all the time. Very unproductive.

why are all your names letters of the alphabet?

you should just get normal names to start with, figuring out the rent will be easier after that

I thought it would be better since people can distinguish between ME, A and B.

split utilities/misc. costs evenly between the three of you.

Your cost = 1295*(double's room sqft*(2/3))/(single's room sqft) / # of people

Assuming:
12'x18': double
12'x12': single

1295*{[216*(2/3)]/144}/3

$431.67 for you
$431.67 for your room-mate
$431.66 for the guy in the single room

If the room dimensions are different, the formula will adjust for that. Very simple, no arguments really.

((square feet of your room / total square feet of both) * rent ) / # ppl staying in your room == how much person pays for rent

everything else split evenly.

why did you multiply by 2/3?

even steven....

I am so glad I never had a roommate situation where some guy/girl moves their guy/girl into their room and figures it's still 50/50 with the other roommate.

ok.. this is going to be complicated but it is fair. :)

divide the rent in half. half for bedrooms and half for common areas. split the common areas half in 3, and each of you pay one of those pieces. split the bedroom part in half, half for each room. the guy with his own room pays the whole half of that part, the guys sharing a room each pay half of that half, or a quarter of the bedroom rent. then you split the bills.. all the bills.. equally.

The room that I'm going to be in with my other roommate is bigger than person B getting his own room. I agree with the whole square feet deal.

I don't agree with that. personal space.. privacy is worth something too. if there's a 4th roommate then the sq ft. thing is good but if it's 2 people sharing and one person not then I'd divide rent the way I said earlier. I'd pay a premium to have my own space.

i lived in an apartment last year that had 3 bedrooms, with me and 3 other guys living there. we split the rent evenly. I would have liked to pay a little less since i was sharing a room but it really didnt seem like that big of a deal....

Yes. 1/3 is the only way to go.

32/32/36 for rent split other bills evenly. friend B has to pay a priemum for his own room, but it can't be too much.

I would say 30/30/40.
I would glad pay the extra 10% to have a room to myself.
That and I don't have to worry about people accusing me of being gay because I room with another guy.
In fact, you will never find me rooming with another guy.
Its.................whats the word..............

GAY !!!

According to that figure, its more like 43%/28.5%/28.5%

I would do it based on the area each person occupies. For example, roughly from that picture the single person will occupy 40% of the bedroom space and you will each split the 60% remaining. The common area is inconsequential - you'd have it no matter how much you paid and you are paying for the convenience of space imho in terms of him getting his own room and you sharing. That would be approx. $388.50 for each of you and $518 for him with his own room if my estimate is somewhat accurate.

This is how the last apartment I saw split up the lease for a similar situation (the management, not the people living there).

1/3 each way. its not like you're spending your entire time in your bedroom and theres no contact with the other roommate. you live together, you share all other rooms, and you all have to deal with eachother.
