How to speed up Win XP boot times?

Launch it and than:
Trace>Optimize System
It's going to make you restart but it's pretty self explanatory after that.

I believe the registry hack you are talking about turned off prefetch of applications, which would speed up your boot but slow down loading of programs. I'm not sure what key it is, but you can also do this with X-Setup.
