How to size windows

Newbie question!..........I can't remember how or where to go to size my windows. For example............. I click on Internet Explorer and the window only comes up minimized. I want it to open to expanded size. Help!! I had to reformat and now I'm dealing with this. My wife, who has little patience when it comes to pc glitches, is really irritated about this. So PLEASE take pity.

Drag the window to the size you want, right click on the title bar of the window, click on size, move the mouse pointer into the middle part of the window and click on it.
